What is Google AdWords?

Google AdWords Logo
Google AdWords is the advertising platform that Google offers allowing anyone to advertise on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) as well as in content (ie. blogs or news websites) or via display ads (traditional banner advertising). Google AdWords is the main source of income for Google and could be considered to be the reason why Google has become so profitable and successful versus its two major competitors, Yahoo! and Bing.

How does Google AdWords work?

Primarily in search advertising Google AdWords allows businesses to appear on Page 1 of search engine results pages, for any keyword phrase, whether their website has a high ranking or not. By creating advertisements related to a keyword search phrase and setting a maximum CPC (Cost-Per-Click) everytime a user enters that phrase in Google, your ad will appear (if your ads are running and your budget is correct!). As illustrated below these ads appear in the top three positions of the search engine results page as well as to the right of the normal results.

Why is this important? You may ask why this would be important for your business and the simple answer is website traffic. In the image below, referred to as a 'heatmap', you can see how important position in search engine results pages are. The red areas represent places on the page that users are more likely to click on, thus producing another website visitor (and potential customer!). Google AdWords allows website owners who are not able to achieve these postions for certain keyword phrases the opportunity to display on Page 1 of search results. These first three positions, where the AdWords advertisments display are in the area of the web page most likely for users to click on, hence making these desirable positions to advertise your business.

Your Google AdWords Budget

How does Google make money from AdWords? Quite simply every time you click on an advertisement you are charged an amount on your Google AdWords account. This amount will vary as AdWords works on a rotational system, with other advertisers included in the bidding system. The amount you are charged for a click on your advertisement relates to the quality of your advertisment (keywords) relative to the content (written text) of your website and the maximum CPC (Cost Per Click) you are willing to pay.
